Sheila Dikshit frontrunner for Cong general secretary incharge of Punjab
New Delhi, June 16: Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit is a frontrunner for the post of Congress general secretary in charge of Punjab with sources saying an official announcement would follow soon.
The three-time Delhi CM, Dikshit will replace Kamal Nath who quit as the general secretary in charge ofPunjab on Wednesday after a storm over his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The Congress is now banking on Dikshit to contain the damage and also lead the party into elections next year.
Dikshit on Thursday morning met Congress president Sonia Gandhi and is learnt to have been asked if she would be ready for the job.
The 78-year-old former MP from Kannauj in UP, Dikshit brings long years of organisational experience to the Congress. The party feels her appointment would come in handy in a faction-ridden Punjab where state chief Capt Amarinder Singh is fighting a do-or-die battle with the ruling Akali-BJP combine and AAP.
