Sardar Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Lecture organized at GNDU
Amritsar, 16 February, 2018 (Nirpakh Awaaz) – The Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences today organized Sardar Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Lecture which was presided over by Prof. (Dr.) Kamaljeet Singh Dean Academic Affairs Guru Nanak Dev University. Padam Shree Dr. Sunita Narain, Director General, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi was the guest speaker.
Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu, the Vice- Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University was appreciated for making special efforts in hosting the Award Lecture by Dr. Sunita Narain and look forward for collaborative programme in the field of Environment. Head of the Department welcomed and introduced the guest to audience. The Coordinator Prof. (Dr.) Renu Bhardwaj briefed the activities of Sardar Jaswant Singh Rai Memorial Trust.
The speaker dealt with the genesis and the rate of deterioration of the problem of pollution in the country with New Delhi as the model. She discussed the issues of solid particulate matter which is deteriorating the ambient air quality. She pointed out the poisonous gases emitted by the combustion of fossil fuel of the vehicles for transportation. This deteriorating quality of air has left irreparable health hazards of living beings. She emphasized that we have allowed the problem to escalate to the present levels. Our sacred rivers have been reduced to open drains and cited several examples of rivers been renamed as nallahs in just past three decades. She said the so called septic tanks are actually containment boxes from where the excreta leaks out and spoils the ground.
About electrical powers she said the country is producing enough power but supplies are faulty. There is an urgent need to introduce alternative means of energy. It was pointed out in her lecture that sewage dispersal is becoming unaffordable for the poor and causing pollution for everybody. She said even nitrogen cycle of the world is being destructed. She also touched upon the farm crisis and water problems of Punjab. She laid stress on sustainability and ecofriendly technologies. Dr. Sunita Narain was felicitated with mementos. Dr. Kamljeet Singh in his presidential address highlighted the initiatives taken by the university in making the sustainable environment of the university. Prof. (Dr.) Avinash Nagpal conveyed vote of thanks. Dr. Jatinder Kaur, the deputy coordinator anchored the stage. The faculty of the department Prof. Satwinderjit Kaur, Dr Amarjeet Singh Soodan, Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Dr. Kirandeep Dhami, Jyoti Kalyani Aqy Dr. Jaswinder Singh Bilga were also present on the occasion.
