Amritsar, July 4: A three-day Capacity Building Training Programme on Punjab Energy Conservation Building Code was inaugurated  at Guru Nanak Dev University. This program was organized by Saakaar Foundation, Chandigarh and VKe: environmental, Pune in collaboration with Department of Architecture of the University and supported by United Nations Development Programme, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) and Global Environment Fund.

 Prof Sarbjot Singh Behl, Dean students welfare was the Chief Guest. He lauded the efforts of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) for promoting the cause of saving energy consumption in buildings. Dr Pankaj Chhabra gave the welcome address.

Ar. Surinder Bahga delivered a talk on salient features of Punjab Energy Conservation Building Code.  He said, “Code will be applicable with conditioned floor area of 500 square metre or more.  Any event having three or more days duration have to comply with this code.  It will also be applicable on additions, alterations to existing buildings.  It will be mandatory to use minimum three star rated equipments in buildings”.

Master Trainer of BEE, Akshay Gupta deliberated on ways to save energy consumption in heating, ventilation and pumping, etc.  He emphasized the need to design energy-efficient buildings. Vevaik Mahajan, a consulting engineer and ECBC Master trainer highlighted about the importance of saving energy in Building engineering systems. He emphasizes on necessity of the implementation of ECBC Code which will result in enormous saving in energy as well as cost. This will lead to minimum load shedding and having the energy reaching to the villages that are yet to see electricity.

In total 33, one-day or two-day training programs are organized in the state of Punjab till date. In last phase four such three day training programs are being organized at Amritsar, Bathinda, Ludhiana and Chandigarh.  Punjab Government had constituted committee of officials of Department of Architecture, Public Works Department, Punjab State Power Corporation Limited, Housing & Urban Development and PEDA to amend Energy Conservation Building Code prepared by Union Government.

 The work was assigned to Architects Surinder Bahga and Archana Chaudhary of Indian Institute of Architects.  They authored the new code after many meetings with the technical committee.

It was notified by Government of Punjab in June, 2016. PEDA is planning to train architects, engineers, builders, planners and officers of urban local bodies through this initiative.  Punjab is now among the 10 states of India which have prepared this code and going to implement it soon.

Officials of PEDA spoke on work being carried by PEDA in the state to promote energy conservation.

This Programme was attended by 75 professionals consisting of architects, engineers, builders, developers and officers of Urban Local Bodies and various other government departments besides some students of architecture.
