Meaning of Yoga is to Unite Body, Mind and Soul through Regulated Breathing: Mr. Sandeep Kumar
Amritsar, 21 June: To mark the 4th anniversary of International Yoga day 2018, Guru Nanak Dev University with the encouragement of Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Jaspal Singh Sandhu organized a yoga event in which students, teachers and non teaching officials from the University actively participated. The event was marked by the presence of Mr. Sandeep Kumar who is currently the President of Bhartiya Yog Sansthan, Amritsar District West and has been following yoga practice since last 10 years.
Mr. Sandeep interacted with the students and conveyed them the relevance of yoga and meditation to reduce the stress and anxiety levels amongst youngsters in the current competitive life. He elaborated on the meaning of yoga which is to unite body; mind and soul through regulated breathing. The event started with simple breathing exercises, mantra meditation on Om and Gayatri mantra. This was followed by demonstration of different seated yoga postures like sukhasana, padmasana, vrajasana by Mr. Sandeep and Mr. Manjeet. Various standing postures were also demonstrated and students performed all the asanas with great energy, enthusiasm and motivation. The yoga teachers were continuously monitoring the students and corrected them for incorrect postures. They also scientifically explained the health benefits of the asanas like tadasana which helps in improving digestion, and strengthen thighs, kness simultaneously. Students performed laughter yoga for few minutes at the end which had a refreshing and rejuvenating effect on them.
Professor HS Gujral, Department of Food Science and Technology and coordinator NSS, GNDU and Dr. Harkirandeep Kaur, Programme officer NSS also attended the event and inspired the students to make yoga a regular part of their life. The event was concluded with presentation of token of appreciation to Mr. Sandeep Kumar and Mr. Manjeet for their significant contribution in spreading awareness and popularizing yoga in Amritsar.
Meanwhile, The Department of Human Genetics of the univeristy also celebrated the International Day of Yoga on the theme “Epigenetic Mechanisms of Integrative Medicine-Role of Yoga and influence on Gene Expression” in keeping with the global health component of UN’s promotion of global health, harmony and peace.
