ANNAPOLIS, MD – November 9 ( Raj Gogna)- Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford today presented the United States Naval Academy’s Midshipman Action Group with a Governor’s citation commemorating their 25th anniversary. The Midshipman Action Group is the volunteer arm of the Naval Academy that works with organizations on the Academy’s campus to provide opportunities for midshipmen to volunteer in Maryland communities.
The group contributes over 25,000 volunteer hours annually, and has partnered with local schools, community centers, and volunteer organizations to provide essential services across Maryland. Recently, the United States Naval Academy has received the distinction of ranking within the top 20 of colleges Most Engaged in Community Service by the Princeton Review.
“The Midshipman Action Group has dedicated countless hours of time and energy to serving communities across the state,” said Lt. Governor Rutherford. “Our administration is honored to present this citation and offers our sincerest gratitude and congratulations on your 25thanniversary.”
Based in Annapolis, the United States Naval Academy is the undergraduate college of the United States Navy. Naval Academy students, also referred to as “Midshipmen,” attend the academy for four years, graduating with Bachelor of Science degrees and commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years in the Navy or Marine Corps.
Founded in 1992, the Midshipman Action Group started with just 10 members from that year’s graduating class. Since then, the group has grown to over 70 active members who dedicate time from their demanding academic and service schedules to volunteer throughout Maryland communities. Among other projects, the Midshipman Action Group has launched a pilot program, partnering with the Stanton Community Center to bring youth to the United States Naval Academy once a week to participate in interactive community engagement sessions with Midshipmen. The Midshipman Action Group also hosts the Mids for Kids, Harvest for the Hungry, and the annual United States Naval Academy – hosted Special Olympics.
