“BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION” Seminar on the world Enviroment Day at Guru Nanak Dev University

Amritsar, 4 june: The Department of Botanical & Environmental sciences of Guru Nanak Dev University in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST), Chandigarh; Central Institute of Plastic Engineering & Technology (CIPET), Amritsar and SDSG (NGO) celebrated the World Environment Day here today in the university campus. The programme mainly stressed upon “BEAT PLASTIC POLLUTION” which included the lecture session by different experts. Around 100 students, research fellows and faculty members of the above institutes were present in this seminar.

            Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Co-coordinator of program highlighted the harmful effects of uses of plastic products to the environment and also told about the remedial role of different microrganism in the degradation of plastic which is an eco-friendly technology. He told to promote the use of jute and cloth bags as an alternative to plastic bags because plastic bags are non-biodegradable and can take 10-1000 years or more to decompose.

            Dr. U. P. Singh, Head & Director, CIPET gave a very interesting lecture on use of plastic in our daily life and told how the life is difficult without plastic. Dr. Manpreet Singh Bhatti, Head, Department of Botanical & Environmental Sciences further added that how we can reduce the plastic consumption in our daily life by using the plastic items which can be reused and recycled easily. He further told about the categorization of plastic on the basis of their constituents and also said to avoid plastic which are only for single use.

            Dr Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Dean, Life Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University was the Chief Guest of the above said seminar. Dr. Adarsh Pal Vig, Co-coordinator, Dr Maneel Grover (SDSG) and Dr Joushwa (PSCST) thanked the students for attending the above said seminar and also thanked PSCST and GNDU for sponsorship to carry out the seminar. Faculty members Prof. A.K. Thukral, Prof. Renu Bhardwaj, Prof. Saroj Arora, Dr. Amarjeet Singh Soodan, Dr. Jatinder Kaur also interacted with the participants. Participants appreciated the efforts of the Department and demanded to organize such environmental awakening programmes in the future for the benefit of the society and students of the neighbouring schools, colleges, villages, institutes etc.
